Hi! I am very excited to join the dedicated team and efforts of the Minnesota Immigrant Freedom Network. For years I have worked closely with immigrants: as my neighbors, friends, and co-workers. Friendships, on both sides of the border, opened my eyes to the deep injustices and inhumanity caused by our present immigration system. From various positions at colleges and other non-profits I did what I could to educate and advocate regarding immigrant rights, the need for deep reforms, and the root causes of our present issues. At the same time assisting families struggling under the injustice of senseless deportations and a broken system.
I began to realize in my previous positions I was limited as to how far I could go and how much I could do; many people are afraid to advocate for immigrants. I wished I could fully devote my time and energy “a la lucha.” Now with MIFN, I am excited to be able to devote my time to: “…empowering and engaging new Minnesotans and their allies through access to education, civic engagement, and leadership development.”
Please join us in this work: the greatest Civil/Human Rights effort since the 1950/60′s. Many of us who are life-long citizens of the USA, have parents and grandparents who missed the opportunity to support the Civil Rights Movement led by Dr. M.L. King and others; most of that generation was stuck in fear and ignorance, and did nothing but watch from a distance.
Today again, millions of Americans are living as second-class people, will we join together and bring needed change? Or, will we stand back and watch as injustice multiplies?
Minnesota Immigrant Freedom Network needs your financial and volunteer support, as we work to re-energize the immigrant movement by empowering immigrant leaders and educating allies for constructive roles in advocacy and support.
